The king of the ANC pack extends its reign

The Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones are our favorite headphones, but you don’t have to only trust us. Go check out any reviews online, and you’ll find nothing but people praising them. These highly respected headphones are known for excelling in pretty much all departments, making them a fantastic acquisition even for the most demanding users.

We have a full Sony WH-1000XM5 review, where you can thoroughly check out all the details. The main lures are excellent audio quality and impressively good ANC performance. Even the microphone sounds great!

However, the sound quality is only the tip of the iceberg for these headphones. These also come with a really nice, minimalist design. They are built very solidly, too, and we found them very comfortable. There’s no lack of features here. You’ll get Bluetooth Multipoint, touch gestures, Find My Device support, and more. Everything works very smoothly; we never ran across any hiccups while testing all these fancy features.

If you care about battery life, the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones excel in this area. We put them through our standardized tests and managed to get about 31 hours from a full charge with ANC enabled. But get this: that gets extended to an impressive 53 hours if you turn ANC off!

There’s no going wrong with the Sony WH-1000XM5. That said, we know it’s still hard to justify spending nearly $300 bucks on a pair of headphones. If you want great quality at a lower price, we also often recommend the previous-gen Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, which are $198 from Amazon right now. You still get great sound quality, awesome ANC, and a plethora of features. Everything is a little less impressive than the XM5s, but not by too much, making them a better value for your hard-earned cash. If the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones are so fabulous, why go with the more expensive Bose QuietComfort Ultra? Bose’s premium headset has one trick up its sleeve: an impressive ANC performance that is beat by none. These are your best option if you want to silence external sound. They are actually our top pick on our list of the best noise canceling headphones.

We would recommend upgrading to these if you value ANC. It will be an excellent option for train commuters, frequent flyers, loud city dwellers, or anyone who is often in very loud environments.

Of course, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra are not all about ANC. These are premium headphones, and they are pretty amazing in other areas, as well. The audio quality is also outstanding, and we were pretty impressed by their passthrough mode.

These still get Bluetooth Multipoint and other great features like Snapdragon Sound. The design is very comfortable. And though battery life isn’t quite as impressive as Sony’s, it’s still pretty awesome, at about 27 hours per charge.

Which of these are you buying? Regardless of your pick, make sure to act quickly. Black Friday deals won’t stick around for much longer. We were waiting a bit to see if the prices would drop below their all-time lows, but it’s not looking like it will happen. Those $298 and $329 record-low resistances are hard to break!
