I tried the world's first headphones with a built-in subwoofer
If you like bass, as in skull-rattling bass, you need to check out the Sonic Lamb headphones. They are the world’s first headphones with what is essentially a built-in subwoofer, in addition to the typical dynamic driver found in other headphones. Sonic Lamb is calling the technology “Hybrid Driver Acoustics with Wooferpads”. I had the opportunity to try out these headphones at CES 2025, and they are unlike any other headphones I’ve tried before.
If you are after an accurate, reference-grade sound then these headphones are not for you. On the other hand, if you love to crank the bass to the max, these headphones might tickle your fancy unlike any other. The unique component is a proprietary impulse driver that reproduces the physical sensation of sound by sending a mechanical impulse through your body. While other manufacturers may use the phrase “skull-rattling” as an idiom to describe their headphones, Sonic Lamb took the phrase literally and actually built headphones that rattle your skull.
Even when you are just holding the headphones by their headband, you can feel the intense low-frequency vibrations. Thankfully, there is a dial built-in the to earcup that allows you to increase or decrease the vibrations to your liking.
Beyond the impulse driver feature, these headphones have some nice features including aptX Adaptive for wireless listening and USB-C for wired listening. There’s also a detachable boom mic, and the ear pads are replaceable which should ensure longevity.
The Sonic Lamb headphones are currently available on the manufacturer’s website for $239 USD.
