- The new Sennheiser HD 505 are open-back headphones with custom 120-ohm drivers.
- The headphones are advertised as having a frequency response of 12-38,500Hz with <0.2% total harmonic distortion.
- The HD 505 also features a familiar modular design with swappable cables and earpads.
Sennheiser today announced the HD 505, a new entry-level audiophile headphone that aims to bridge the gap between consumer and high-end audio segments. At $279.95, these open-back headphones target both music enthusiasts and gamers looking to upgrade their listening experience.
The HD 505 features custom-made 120-ohm transducers manufactured at Sennheiser’s Tullamore facility in Ireland, which our team recently visited. Technical specifications include a wide frequency response range of 12-38,500Hz and total harmonic distortion below 0.2%. The drivers are angled to mimic nearfield speaker placement, potentially offering better soundstage imaging.

Build quality appears to focus on practicality and longevity. The headphones weigh 237 grams and feature synthetic leather on the headband and metal mesh earcup covers. Like other 500-series models, the HD 505 maintains a modular design with user-replaceable cables and earpads.
The package includes a detachable 1.8m cable with a 3.5mm connector and a 6.3mm adapter. Users can purchase additional cables separately, including balanced options and variants with inline microphones.
The HD 505 is available now on Amazon for $279.95. It competes in a crowded segment against offerings from Audio-Technica, Beyerdynamic, and others in the sub-$300 price range.
