TL;DR
  • The Nintendo Switch 2 features upgraded speakers with clearer, more balanced sound and spatial 3D audio.
  • A built-in microphone with noise cancelation enables native voice chat via GameChat.
  • The new Switch 2 Pro controller adds a long-requested 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio passthrough.

After years of lagging behind on audio features, Nintendo is finally catching up — and, in some cases, making bold new moves. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 brings a suite of long-requested upgrades to its audio experience, including improved onboard speakers, spatial 3D audio, and — for the first time — a built-in microphone with noise cancelation. Paired with a new Switch 2 Pro controller that finally includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, it’s a promising sign that Nintendo is taking in-game audio and communication seriously.

Let’s be honest: the original Switch wasn’t exactly a standout when it came to sound. Its tinny speakers and lack of native voice chat put it well behind the likes of the PlayStation and Xbox, both of which have long supported integrated audio features and headset jacks in their controllers. That changes with the Switch 2. Nintendo says the console’s upgraded speakers now offer a more natural and balanced sound profile by adjusting the audio balance across frequency ranges. The wider size of the new unit should also allow for better stereo separation, helping sounds feel more distinct and directional when gaming in handheld or tabletop mode.

The addition of spatial 3D audio simulates surround sound even without external hardware, creating a more immersive soundstage. And for players using headphones or earbuds, the same 3D audio enhancements will apply — as long as the game supports it. Another big step forward: built-in voice chat. Previously, players had to juggle a separate smartphone app just to talk to friends. Now, the Switch 2 includes a built-in microphone with noise cancelation, letting players chat natively through Nintendo’s new GameChat feature. It’s a move that puts Nintendo much closer to the standard set by other platforms — and one that could dramatically improve the experience of online play for titles like Splatoon, Mario Kart, or Smash Bros.

And then there’s the controller. While the original Switch console had a 3.5mm headphone jack, this is the first time Nintendo is including one on a controller. The new $79.99 Switch 2 Pro controller places the jack just beneath the D-pad, supporting wired audio passthrough — a convenience Xbox and PlayStation users have taken for granted for nearly a decade.

It’s also worth pointing out that Nintendo remains one of the only console makers to support Bluetooth audio pairing natively, a feature it added in a 2021 update to the original Switch. While Bluetooth introduces additional latency — especially noticeable in competitive games — it’s a welcome option for casual players who prefer using wireless earbuds. PlayStation and Xbox still don’t support Bluetooth audio without third-party adapters.

All of these changes might seem overdue, but they’re significant. With the Switch 2, Nintendo isn’t just refining the handheld gaming experience — it’s showing a willingness to align more closely with modern gaming standards, especially when it comes to audio immersion and player communication.

The Switch 2 and its Pro controller are expected to launch on June 5. In the coming weeks, more details on the software and accessories will likely be available.
