The JBL Tune 520BT can lay flat, which makes them easier to stuff into a bag.

Usually, stunning sound quality comes with a high price tag attached. But every now and then, we find those unicorns that really break all the rules. Such is the case for the JBL Tune 520BT on-ear headphones. We would actually recommend these at their full retail price of $49.95, but today they are even cheaper at $39.95. That is just way too good to ignore.

OK, so here’s the deal. We put all headphones through a rigorous set of tests, including the MDAQS (Multi-Dimensional Audio Quality Score) test. You can learn all about the MDAQS scoring system here, but essentially, it tells us how good audio quality is, based on average listener preferences.

The JBL Tune 520BT actually scored the highest out of all wireless headphones released in 2024. This model beat them all, including much more expensive headphones from big players, such as the Sony ULT WEAR, Sonos ACE, and even the $699 Bowers & Wilkins PX8! We know, it’s crazy, but you can’t argue with objective tests! Here’s our full 2024 report, if you want to dig deeper into the details.

At just $39.95, these headphones are great if you want excellent sound quality for as little as possible. We also loved how they fold for easier portability, and the available colors are really fun. The JBL Tune 520BT is also impressive in the battery life department. Our standardized tests pushed these for a whopping 60 hours and 52 minutes! Again, that is just unheard of in terms of the price range.

Though inexpensive, the JBL Tune 520BT is a competent set of headphones.

Of course, paying so little for a pair of headphones will come with some downsides. Are they deal-breakers? Not necessarily, but you should keep the shortcomings in mind before buying the JBL Tune 520BT. For starters, we found that some users might find them uncomfortable for long wearing sessions, mainly because the on-ear design and slightly excessive clamping force on the band. The construction is also very plasticky, as one would expect from such affordable headphones.

There’s also kind of an odd caveat if you want to use these with iOS or Android devices. For some bizarre reasonl, you need the app. Like, it’s not optional. However, we were actually surprised to see they support Bluetooth Multipoint! Even expensive headphones don’t always include this.

All things considered, we’re sure you can ignore the caveats if you’re getting really good sound quality for five cents under $40 bucks! Go get this deal while you can.
