TL;DR
  • The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 adds heart rate monitoring, ANC, Transparency mode, and wireless charging for the same price of $249.99
  • Battery life is rated to remain the same at around 10 hours per charge (8 hours with ANC), with 45 hours total using the case.
  • The workout-focused earbuds are available in four colors starting February 13th.

Beats today announced the Powerbeats Pro 2, bringing several major upgrades to its fitness-focused wireless earbuds line. These include heart rate monitoring capabilities, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Transparency mode, and the newer Apple H2 chip for better connectivity.

While heart rate tracking in earbuds isn’t new — Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM Sport ($329 at Amazon) already offers this alongside body temperature monitoring using PPG sensors — Beats’ implementation at a lower price point could make this technology more accessible to everyday athletes.

The Powerbeats Pro 2’s heart rate monitoring uses LED optical sensors that pulse over 100 times per second to measure blood flow during workouts. At launch, this data can be integrated with select fitness apps, including Peloton, Nike Run Club, and several others. iPhone users get automatic workout detection, while Android users will need to manually start heart rate sessions through the Beats app.

Beats claims the new model is 20% lighter thanks to a redesigned ear hook while keeping the same IPX4 rating for sweat resistance. The case is also 33% smaller and finally supports wireless charging. Battery life is still 10 hours per charge or 8 with ANC enabled.

While several media outlets have published their reviews alongside today’s announcement, SoundGuys has not received a review unit for objective testing. We look forward to purchasing a retail unit to provide our standard comprehensive measurements of frequency response, noise cancelation performance, and real-world battery life — metrics that seem conspicuously absent from the early coverage.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 is available for pre-order today at $249.99 in Jet Black, Quick Sand, Hyper Purple, and Electric Orange colorways. Retail availability will begin on February 13th.
